The pattern, drape and target cost still need to be considered. For example, a heavier silk may give a more substantial feel, but that does not mean it is the right choice for every slip dress. We look at the actual silhouette, pattern and target price before making the final recommendation.
Choosing The Right Momme For A Silk Slip Dress
Momme is one of the first fabric specifications checked during silk dress development.
The weight affects the hand feel, opacity, drape and overall appearance of the finished dress.

We would not recommend choosing the highest momme simply because it sounds more premium.
We normally make the decision after looking at the actual pattern and sample. A fabric that works well for one slip dress may not give the same result on another silhouette.
Silk Slip Dress Sample Development
The first sample is where the design meets the actual fabric.
A measurement chart can tell us the finished dimensions, but it cannot show exactly how a lightweight silk will fall from the shoulder or how a bias-cut skirt will settle after hanging.
First Sample
We make the initial sample from your approved measurements, design files, reference garment or existing pattern.
The main points checked at this stage include:
- Overall silhouette
- Bust and waist fit
- Neckline shape
- Strap position
- Dress length
- Fabric drape
- Side seams
- Hem appearance
- Main construction details
Fit & Construction Adjustments
After sample review, measurement and construction changes are made to the next sample where required.
For silk slip dresses, we pay particular attention to the bust, waist, hips, straps and hem because the fabric may sit differently on the body than it does on the cutting table.
If the fabric drops or stretches differently from the expected fit, the pattern is adjusted before the style moves into bulk production.
Final Approval Sample
Once the fit and construction are confirmed, the approved sample becomes the production reference.
The bulk order can then be checked against the confirmed fabric, measurements, color, labels, finishing and packaging requirements.
Our usual silk slip dress sample lead time is 3–7 days, depending on fabric availability and construction complexity.
Silk Slip Dress Cutting & Sewing
Silk requires different handling from many standard dress fabrics.
Before cutting, the fabric is inspected and allowed to relax where necessary. This is particularly important for lightweight and bias-cut styles.
The pattern is then placed according to the required grain direction. For bias designs, the diagonal direction of the panels needs to be controlled carefully because even a small change can affect the way the dress hangs.
During sewing, we pay attention to narrow seams, straps, neckline construction, side seams and hem finishing. Lightweight silk can show puckering, distortion or uneven stitching more easily than heavier fabrics.
Bias Cut Requires More Fabric
Bias-cut slip dresses normally require higher fabric consumption than comparable straight-cut styles.
The pattern pieces cannot always be packed as closely together, and additional fabric may be required depending on the width of the fabric and the design.
We account for this when calculating fabric consumption and production costs.
For costing purposes, fabric consumption should be confirmed before the bulk order is placed.
Why Bias Cutting Matters
Bias cutting is one of the details that can make a silk slip dress look very different from a straight-cut dress.
The panels are placed diagonally against the fabric grain, allowing the silk to move more freely around the body. This creates the soft, fluid drape commonly associated with slip dresses.
The downside is that the fabric is less stable during production.
The dress can change slightly in length after hanging, and seams or hems may move if the grain direction is not controlled properly.
Bias direction, fabric relaxation, pattern placement and finished length are checked during sample development.
For repeat production, these details are kept with the approved sample and production specifications. The next batch can then be checked against the same reference.
Quality Control For Silk Slip Dresses
Silk has a smooth surface, so small defects can be easier to see after the garment is finished.
Quality checks are therefore carried out during production rather than relying only on the final inspection.
QC checks include:
