Formal Dress Manufacturing for Your Collection

If you are developing a new formal dress collection, you can start with a sketch, tech pack, reference garment or product image. At Xiuyu Apparel, we first check the fabric, measurements, construction and finishing details before the sample is made.

For a more complicated style, some problems only become clear once the first sample is made. The neckline may need more support, the fabric may not drape as expected, or a construction detail may push the cost above your target.

It is easier to deal with these points during sampling than after bulk cutting and sewing have started.

Our formal dress manufacturing service covers fabric sourcing, pattern development, sampling, sewing, finishing, inspection and bulk production. As a dress manufacturer, we can also support brands developing several dress styles within the same collection.

Formal Dress Styles We Manufacture

Your formal dress collection can include different fabrics, silhouettes and construction details. We develop each style according to its own fabric, pattern and sewing requirements, rather than using the same production method for every dress.

Catalogue from Xiuyu Apparel

Black Formal Dress

Black Formal Dress

Black formal dresses are commonly used across evening, party and occasionwear collections. You can adjust the fabric, lining, neckline, length and finishing details to match your target market and price range.

Formal Maxi Dress

Formal Maxi Dress

We make formal maxi dresses in satin, chiffon, velvet and other fabrics. Pattern and length can be adjusted to suit the fit and fabric used. For broader maxi dress collections, see our maxi dress manufacturer service.

Strapless Formal Dress

Strapless Formal Dress

Strapless styles usually need more work inside the bodice than is visible from the outside. Depending on the fabric and fit, we may use cups, boning, stabilizing tape or other internal support. For more structured bodices, you can also explore our corset dress manufacturer service.

Plus Size Formal Dress

Plus Size Formal Dress

Plus size development is not simply a matter of scaling up the base pattern. We check the proportions, fit and construction across the size range before bulk production.

Formal Tiered Dress

Formal Tiered Dress

Tier placement, fabric weight and gathering all affect the final shape. We adjust the layers according to the pattern and fabric used.

Satin Formal Dress

Satin Formal Dress

Satin requires clean cutting and controlled sewing to keep the surface smooth. Fabric, lining and finishing are checked according to the style and target price.

Formal Midi Dress

Formal Midi Dress

A practical length for both occasionwear and seasonal collections, with flexible options for neckline, waistline and skirt shape.

Off-Shoulder Formal Dress

Off-Shoulder Formal Dress

The neckline and upper bodice need to stay in place while keeping a clean appearance. We can refine the construction through sample fitting.

Formal Dress Construction

On formal dresses, the fit is often decided by the pattern, lining and internal support rather than the outer design alone.

With fitted bodices, strapless necklines, open backs and shaped waists, we need to get the pattern, lining, support and seams right before moving into bulk production. Small details in the construction can make a noticeable difference to the way the dress fits and holds its shape.

Bodice Construction

Depending on the design, the bodice may include:

  • Bust support
  • Boning
  • Cups
  • Interfacing
  • Corset construction
  • Internal stabilizing tape
  • Structured waist sections
  • Reinforced seams
Skirt Construction

Different skirt constructions we work with include:

  • A-line
  • Mermaid
  • Draped
  • Pleated
  • Layered
  • Slit
  • Full
  • Bias-cut
Neckline & Back Details

Common neckline and back treatments include:

  • Strapless
  • Sweetheart
  • V-neck
  • Square neck
  • Halter
  • One-shoulder
  • Open back
  • Lace-up back
  • Deep back
Closures & Finishing

Depending on the style, we can use different closures and finishing details, such as:

  • Invisible zippers
  • Metal zippers
  • Hook and eye closures
  • Buttons
  • Lace-up closures
  • Custom hardware

Formal Dress Fabrics We Work With

Choosing the fabric before making the sample is important. The same pattern can behave very differently depending on fabric weight, stretch, drape, surface and recovery.

When you have a specific target price or fabric in mind, we can check the available quality before sampling and confirm whether it works for the design.

5-fabric Satin
Satin

Satin is widely used for formal and evening dresses, but different satin qualities can produce very different results.

If you are developing a dedicated satin collection, see our satin dress manufacturer service for fabric, sampling and bulk production options.

Silk fabric
Silk

For higher-end collections, we work with silk satin, mulberry silk and silk blends. If silk is the main fabric for your collection, you can also see our silk dress manufacturer service for more details on silk sourcing, sampling and production.

Chiffon Fabric
Chiffon

Chiffon is commonly used for sleeves, overlays and flowing skirts. Because the fabric can move during cutting, we pay close attention to fabric handling and layer alignment during sampling.

Lace Fabric
Lace

For patterned lace, motif placement at the seams needs to be checked before bulk cutting. Depending on the design, this can also increase fabric usage. For larger lace-based collections, see our lace dress manufacturer service for more information on lace sourcing and production.

Velvet Fabric
Velvet

Velvet is commonly used for autumn and winter formalwear. The pile has a clear direction, so the panels need to be cut consistently. Pressing also needs care because the surface can show marks if handled incorrectly.

If velvet is a major part of your collection, our velvet dress manufacturer service covers fabric direction, cutting, pressing and bulk production.

Sequin Fabric
Sequin Fabrics

Sequin fabric usually requires more preparation than a standard woven fabric. Depending on the construction, some areas may need trimming before sewing. For collections built around embellished styles, our sequin dress manufacturer service covers sequin fabric handling, sampling and bulk production.

How We Handle Formal Dress Development

When you send us a new formal dress style, our pattern maker checks the measurements and construction before sampling. If the first sample shows a problem with fit, lining or fabric handling, we adjust it before bulk production.

After approval, the sample and confirmed specifications are used as the production reference. QC checks the garments during sewing and again before packing.

This workflow is particularly useful for fitted, structured or fabric-sensitive formal dresses.

What You Can Send for Formal Dress Development

You do not need a finished tech pack to ask us about a formal dress.

Send whatever you have at the moment:

  • Tech pack
  • Sketch or drawing
  • Reference photo
  • Existing sample
  • Fabric or material requirement
  • Estimated order quantity

If you only have a photo or sketch, that is fine. We can first look at the fabric, measurements, construction and finishing details to see what will be needed to make the style properly.

Before sampling, we will usually confirm the fabric, size range, measurements, construction, sample cost and expected quantity. Details such as lining, boning, lace, sequins, draping or special finishing may also need to be discussed before the sample is cut.

How We Manufacture Formal Dresses

Factory Picture Reception
Factory Picture Cutting Room

01. Design & Tech Pack Review

We first check your design, measurements, construction details and material requirements.

If anything is unclear, we confirm it before pattern making or sampling. For fitted formal dresses, neckline shape, waist position, length and lining construction are confirmed before sampling.

02. Fabric & Trim Sourcing

We source fabric and trims according to the style and your target requirements.

03. Pattern & Sample Development

Once the main details are confirmed, our pattern team prepares the pattern and first sample.

The pattern is checked for measurements, panel shapes, seam allowances and construction. For fitted or structured dresses, we pay particular attention to the bodice, waist and overall balance before cutting the sample.

04. Fit Adjustment & PP Sample

The first sample gives us a chance to see how the design actually works in fabric.

If changes are needed, we adjust the pattern rather than simply altering the finished garment. This may include the neckline, length, waist, sleeves, drape or lining. Once the fit and construction are approved, the PP sample becomes the reference for bulk production.

05. Fabric Inspection, Pre-shrinking & Cutting

Before cutting, fabric is checked for defects, shade differences and other problems that could affect the order. Where required, fabric is pre-shrunk before the approved pattern is used for cutting.

06. Sewing & Inline QC

Cut panels are sent to the sewing line according to the approved construction.

Depending on the style, this can include lining, zippers, gathers, pleats, boning, closures or decorative details. QC checks are carried out during production so that stitching, measurements and construction problems can be found and corrected before they continue through the line.

07. Pressing & Final Inspection

After sewing, each garment goes through pressing and finishing.

Loose threads are removed, seams are pressed and the garment is shaped for its final appearance. Before packing, we check measurements, stitching, fabric condition, labels, closures and overall appearance against the approved sample and production requirements.

08. Packing & Shipment

Once the final inspection is completed, garments are packed according to your requirements. We check labels, barcodes, carton markings and quantities before the cartons are closed. After the packing details are confirmed, the finished order is ready for shipment.

Formal Dress Production Examples

Satin Formal Dress

Fabric: Satin
Silhouette: A-Line
Construction: Structured Bodice
Lining: Custom
Application: Formalwear / Evening Collection

Satin tends to show fitting and pressing problems clearly. For a structured bodice, we check the panel shape, seam allowance, lining and internal support before moving into bulk production.

The skirt also needs enough control to hold its shape without making the garment unnecessarily stiff.

If you are developing a wider satin collection, see our satin dress manufacturer service.

Sequin Formal Dress

Fabric: Sequin Fabric
Silhouette: Fitted
Lining: Polyester or Custom Lining
Decoration: Sequin Surface

With sequin fabric, we check the direction of the sequins and how each panel joins at the seams.

Depending on the fabric construction, some areas may need trimming before sewing. Lining is also checked carefully so the inside remains comfortable and the seams stay clean.

For larger embellished collections, see our sequin dress manufacturer service.

Silk Formal Dress

Fabric: Silk Satin or Silk Blend
Silhouette: Bias Cut
Finish: Clean Internal Construction

Bias-cut silk can change during production. We check fabric condition, shrinkage, finished length and drape during sample development.

The sample may need time to settle before final measurements are confirmed. This gives a more reliable reference for the bulk order.

For a dedicated silk collection, see our silk dress manufacturer service.

Our Capabilities

As a custom clothing manufacturer, we handle the main production steps in-house, from pattern making and sampling through cutting, sewing, finishing, and final inspection. Our team works from your tech pack, sample, sketch, or reference and checks the details before the style moves into bulk production.

Keeping these stages with one production team makes it easier to deal with pattern changes, sample revisions, and construction issues before cutting starts. We can also arrange screen printing and custom embroidery when these details are part of the design.

Send us your design, reference sample or tech pack. If you already know the quantity, fabric preference and delivery date, include those details as well.

We will review the construction, materials and production requirements before sampling.

Send Your Design → Get a Sample → Approve → Start Production

What is the MOQ for custom formal dresses?

Our MOQ for custom formal dresses is usually 50–100 pieces per style and color, depending on the fabric, construction and order requirements. For new brands or smaller collections, we can discuss the quantity before sampling and confirm the practical MOQ based on your specific design.

Can I manufacture formal dresses without a complete tech pack?

Yes. You can start with a sketch, reference photo, existing sample or basic measurements. Our pattern team can help turn the idea into a workable sample. During development, we confirm the fabric, measurements, construction and finishing details with you before the sample is approved for bulk production.

How long does it take to develop a formal dress sample?

A formal dress sample usually takes 3–7 days, depending on the fabric, construction and amount of detail. Styles with beading, sequins, structured bodices or special fabrics may take longer. Once we receive your design details, we can check the sample time before starting development.

How long does bulk formal dress production take?

Bulk production usually takes around 25–30 days after the sample is approved, depending on the order quantity, fabric availability and construction. If the style uses special fabrics, custom dyeing or detailed handwork, we will confirm the production schedule with you before placing the order.

Can You Add Custom Labels and Packaging to Formal Dresses?

Yes. We can add your woven or printed labels, care labels, hangtags and custom packaging as part of the production order. You can provide your existing branding files or label specifications, and we will confirm the details with you before production to avoid mistakes.

How should I choose a formal dress manufacturer?

Look beyond the quoted unit price. Check whether the factory can handle your fabric, pattern, construction and finishing requirements, and ask how samples are transferred into bulk production. It also helps to review actual factory capabilities, MOQ, sample time, QC process and previous formalwear work before placing an order.
