Why Choose Xiuyu Apparel for Skater Dress Production?
A skater dress depends heavily on the relationship between the bodice, waistline and flared skirt. During sampling, we check these areas together because a small change in the waist position or skirt volume can noticeably alter the finished shape.
Xiuyu Apparel has been making dresses since 2007. Our factory includes:
- 750+ production workers
- 500+ sewing machines
- 5 automatic cutting lines
- 5,000㎡ production facility
- 15 pattern makers and 35 sample sewers in our sample room
- Export experience to 40+ countries
Our in-house team covers fabric sourcing, pattern making, sampling, cutting, sewing, inspection and packing. Pattern development and sample making are handled in our own sample room before a style moves to bulk production.
Custom Skater Dress Manufacturing
When we develop a skater dress, the skirt flare is checked together with the bodice and waistline. Fabric weight, waist position and finished length all affect how the flare sits on the finished garment, so these points are checked during sample development.
Development can start from a tech pack, sketch, reference photo, existing garment or even an early design idea. We review the measurements, construction and fabric before pattern development. The first sample is used to check the bodice, waist seam, skirt flare and finished length. Any fit or proportion issues found at this stage are marked for revision before the next sample.
A tech pack, sketch, reference garment or basic product concept is enough to start. As the project moves forward, the measurements, fabric, color, trims, labels and packaging can be confirmed before sampling. As an experienced dress manufacturer, Xiuyu Apparel supports custom development from pattern making and sampling to bulk production.

Skater Dress Fabric & Material Options
The fabric has a direct effect on how a skater dress holds its shape. Cotton may give the skirt more body, while chiffon or softer jersey will usually create more movement.
Common fabric options include:
- Cotton
- Cotton stretch
- Polyester
- Rayon
- Jersey
- Ponte
- Chiffon
- Satin
- Crepe
- Mesh
- Knit fabrics
A fuller skirt needs enough fabric body to keep its shape. Softer fabrics tend to fall closer to the body, so the same pattern may need a different flare or construction after fabric selection.
Stretch fabrics need to be checked for both stretch and recovery. The waist, armhole and finished measurements can change after the fabric is stretched, so we check the sample again after fitting and movement.
Shrinkage is also worth confirming before bulk cutting. If the finished length or waist measurement is important to your collection, fabric testing should happen before the production pattern is finalized.
The production fabric should be confirmed before PP approval. If the bulk fabric has different weight, stretch or drape from the sample fabric, the approved sample may not accurately represent the finished production garment.
Custom Skater Dress Options
You can adjust the design according to your collection, target customer and price range.
| Option | Custom Choices |
|---|---|
| Silhouette | Fitted bodice, flared, fuller flare, gathered or layered skirt |
| Length | Mini, above knee, knee, midi and custom lengths |
| Neckline | V-neck, square neck, scoop, sweetheart, cowl, halter and others |
| Sleeve | Sleeveless, short sleeve, puff sleeve, fitted sleeve and long sleeve |
| Fabric | Jersey, chiffon, satin, cotton, crepe, velvet, lace, mesh and others |
| Color | Standard colors or custom Pantone colors |
| Size | XS–XXL or custom measurement specifications |
| Digital, screen, placement and all-over printing | |
| Decoration | Embroidery, appliqué, beading and sequins |
| Lining | Standard or specified lining |
| Branding | Woven labels, printed labels, size labels and care labels |
| Packaging | Hangtags, polybags, cartons, boxes and custom packaging |
These options can also be combined in one style. A fitted bodice can be developed with a fuller midi skirt, or the same pattern can be sampled in a lightweight printed fabric for a summer range.
Popular Skater Dress Styles We Can Manufacture
We manufacture skater dresses in different lengths, fabrics and constructions. The sections below cover several styles commonly developed from the skater silhouette.

Mini Skater Dress
A mini skater dress needs the right balance between the fitted bodice and short skirt. During fitting, we check the finished length, waist position and skirt fullness together. Even a small length adjustment can change the balance between the bodice and short skirt.

Midi Skater Dress
A midi skater dress carries more fabric below the waist, so fabric weight and drape become more noticeable. Satin, chiffon, jersey and woven fabrics can give the same pattern very different skirt shapes.

Floral Skater Dress
Floral skater dresses may use all-over, placement or custom prints. For a specific motif at the center front or waist, the print layout needs to be planned before cutting. Fabric width and print direction can also affect marker efficiency and fabric use.

Long Sleeve Skater Dress
Adding sleeves changes the armhole and upper-body fit. Sleeve width, sleeve length and arm movement are checked against the bodice fit. A close-fitting sleeve needs enough ease for movement without making the upper body look loose.

Halter Skater Dress
With a halter skater dress, small changes at the neckline can affect the whole fit. We check strap length, neckline depth, bust coverage and back attachment during fitting. Too much or too little tension can pull the bodice out of shape.

Ruched Skater Dress
Ruching affects both the appearance and finished measurements of the dress. We test the gathering ratio, elastic or drawstring position and fabric recovery on the base pattern before finalizing the sample.

Velvet Skater Dress
Velvet works well for autumn, winter and occasion styles, but the fabric needs careful handling. Nap direction should stay consistent when cutting. Pressing temperature and handling also matter, as poor treatment can flatten or mark the surface.

Printed Skater Dress
Digital, screen and placement printing are common options for skater dresses. For placement prints, we check the artwork on the sewn garment, not just the paper pattern. Once the skirt is shaped, a print can look different from its position before sewing.
Factory Certifications
Our factory holds BSCI, GOTS, ISO 9001 and OEKO-TEX certifications. The applicable certification depends on the product, fabric and production requirements, so we confirm the relevant documents when discussing an order.

How to Start a Custom Skater Dress Order
A tech pack, sketch, reference garment or basic product concept is enough to start. As the project moves forward, the measurements, fabric, color, trims, labels and packaging can be confirmed before sampling.
Before sampling, we confirm the key measurements, fabric, finished length and construction details so the pattern team has a clear production reference. Fabric weight and drape also affect how the skirt falls and how much volume the finished dress has.
If your collection includes styles beyond skater dresses, Xiuyu Apparel also works as a clothing manufacturer for broader womenswear production.

Quality Control Points for Skater Dresses
QC covers more than stitching on a skater dress.
For a skater dress, we pay particular attention to:
- Bodice measurements
- Waist position
- Bust fit
- Armhole measurement
- Neckline shape
- Skirt flare
- Finished length
- Skirt panel balance
- Seam quality
- Zipper construction
- Lining
- Fabric defects
- Print placement
- Loose threads
- Pressing and finishing
Stretch fabrics are checked for recovery and finished measurements. Printed styles are checked against the approved artwork for placement. With velvet and other directional fabrics, the nap or fabric direction is confirmed during cutting.
The approved sample remains the reference for measurements, construction and appearance throughout bulk production.
What Affects Skater Dress Manufacturing Cost?
The silhouette is only one part of the production cost. Fabric consumption, skirt construction, bodice details, lining and finishing also affect the quotation.
- Fabric type and fabric weight
- Skirt flare and fabric consumption
- Bodice construction
- Total garment length
- Lining requirements
- Print or embroidery
- Lace, beading or other trims
- Zipper or other closure construction
- Construction complexity
- Order quantity
- Custom labels and packaging
Skirt flare should be considered early in costing. A fuller skirt uses more fabric, and the final consumption also depends on fabric width and the cutting layout. A longer skirt, added lining or more detailed bodice construction can increase sewing and finishing time as well.
If you have a target price, share it at the development stage. Fabric, skirt construction and finishing options can then be compared against the target.

What You Need to Start a Skater Dress Project
You can start with a complete tech pack, or with a reference image if the design is still being developed.

Skater Dress Development & Sampling Process
A typical project moves through:
Design Review → Pattern Development → Fabric & Trim Confirmation → First Sample → Fit Revision → PP Sample Approval → Bulk Cutting → Sewing → QC → Packing
Design Review
You can send a complete tech pack, but a finished garment, sketch or reference photo can also be used as the starting point.
Before sampling, the construction details that affect material usage, sewing time and fit should be identified.
Pattern Development
The pattern department develops the garment according to the confirmed measurements and construction.
For a skater dress, the skirt flare is one of the first things to check. A small change in the flare can affect both the appearance and fabric consumption.
First Sample
The first sample is the first physical version used for fitting and construction checks. At this stage, we review the waist position, neckline, skirt volume, finished length, fabric behavior and overall proportion.
Fit Revision
Not every change needs a completely new design. Sometimes the issue is a waist measurement, hem length or flare adjustment.
Those changes are recorded and applied to the next sample rather than being handled through informal messages alone.
PP Sample Approval
The PP sample represents the version approved for bulk production.
Fabric, color, measurements, construction and key appearance details should be confirmed before bulk cutting starts.
Bulk Production
Once the production fabric and PP sample are confirmed, bulk cutting can begin.
Common Skater Dress Production Problems
Waist Position
The waistline is one of the easiest ways to change the appearance of a skater dress.
If it sits too high, the skirt can look longer and the upper body shorter. If it sits too low, the intended skater proportion may be lost.
Waist position is best checked on the fitted sample rather than from the measurement chart alone.
Skirt Flare
More flare does not simply mean a better skater silhouette.
A wider flare increases fabric consumption and can change how the hem moves. With some fabrics, excessive flare can also make the skirt heavier than intended.
The flare should be confirmed together with fabric width, weight and finished length.
Fabric Stretch & Recovery
Stretch can make a garment easier to fit, but recovery matters just as much.
If the fabric stretches during wear and does not return properly, the waist can become loose and the skirt shape can change.
For stretch skater dresses, the selected fabric should be checked during sampling rather than assuming all stretch fabrics will behave in the same way.
Hem Balance
A flared hem does not always hang evenly simply because the pattern measurements are correct.
Fabric grain, stretch, bias areas and garment construction can affect the final hem. The dress should be allowed to hang naturally before the hem is checked and finished.
Fabric Consumption
A skater dress can use considerably more fabric than a straight dress because of the skirt flare.
Fabric width also matters. A pattern that fits efficiently on one fabric width may require a different cutting layout on another.
For your costing, the fabric consumption should therefore be considered alongside the pattern rather than estimated from the finished length alone.

Inside Our Manufacturing Workshop

 Fabric Warehouse
Fabric rolls are labeled and recorded when they arrive. Batch information is kept with the material records so the correct fabric can be matched to each order.
↓

Fabric Inspection
Satin, silk and other smooth fabrics need extra checking because even small marks can remain visible on the finished garment.
↓

Fabric Pre-shrinking
After fabric inspection, selected fabrics go through a pre-shrinking process before cutting. This helps control shrinkage and keeps finished measurements more consistent across the order.
↓

Automatic Cutting
The cutting system keeps pattern pieces consistent across the order and helps control fabric usage, especially when a style has many panels or several sizes.
↓

Bulk Production Sewing
Sewing operators work from the approved sample and production specifications, with construction checked as the order moves through the line.
↓

In-line Inspection
QC checks the garment as it moves through production, including stitching, measurements and construction. Problems found on the line can then be corrected before the finished garments reach final inspection.
↓

In-line Pressing
Pressing is adjusted according to the fabric and garment construction, especially around seams, hems and shaped areas.
↓

Final Pressing
Before packing, finished garments are pressed to smooth seams and shape key areas before final checking.
↓

Final Inspection
Before shipment, finished garments are checked for measurements, stitching, labels, packing and quantity by style, color and size.
↓

Garment Packing
Finished garments are folded and packed according to each order’s requirements. Labels, tags, barcodes and packaging details are checked before cartons are sealed.
↓

Finished Products
Finished garments are arranged by style, color and size before shipment.

Yes. A sketch or reference photo can be used as the starting point for pattern development. If the design does not include complete measurements, our pattern team will need your target size, fit requirements and key construction details before preparing the sample.
The flare is controlled through the skirt pattern, panel shape and finished measurements. We check the sample on the garment rather than judging the flare only from the flat pattern. Once the shape is approved, the same construction is used for bulk production.
Send your design image or tech pack, target quantity, fabric preference, size range and color requirements. If you have a reference garment, fabric swatch, artwork or packaging specification, include those as well. This gives the factory a clearer basis for reviewing construction and cost.
Our usual MOQ is 50–100 pcs per style/color. The exact production arrangement can vary according to the fabric, construction and order requirements. For a startup collection, it is useful to confirm the style and material before increasing the quantity for repeat orders.
Yes. We can arrange woven or printed labels, size and care labels, hangtags, barcodes, polybags and cartons. If you have specific packaging dimensions or packing instructions, send them during development so the requirements can be confirmed before bulk production.
Yes. You can provide a fabric specification, reference fabric or simply describe the required weight, hand feel, stretch and appearance. We can source options for review. Once the fabric is selected, its behavior should be confirmed before the final pattern and PP sample are approved.
